High-Level Event in Commemoration of the International Day to
Combat Islamophobia

Statement by H.E Mr. James Larsen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations

16 March 2026

I thank the OIC for convening this important event and for its leadership in the global effort to combat Islamophobia.

Everyone should be able to live in safety, proud of who they are, whatever their faith, ethnicity or culture.

Yet on this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we must confront a harsh truth: Islamophobia is rising.

Muslim communities continue to face threats, violence, and attacks on their places of worship and sacred texts. Some are harassed, detained, or even killed simply for being Muslim.

This is unacceptable.

We must also recognise the deep distress that the conflict in the Middle East has caused—felt in this room, and across Muslim communities worldwide.

I have three key messages today.

First, Australia unequivocally condemns Islamophobia—along with all forms of prejudice, hatred, and discrimination—both at home and globally.
Second, we are taking concrete action.

Australia has appointed Mr Aftab Malik as Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia as part of our broader effort to strengthen social cohesion and
interfaith dialogue.

We are now reviewing his recommendations—launched in the presence of our Prime Minister—to ensure lasting support for Muslim communities and social cohesion.

We have enacted Australia’s strongest ever hatecrime laws and remain committed to countering hate speech while protecting freedom of religion,
belief, and expression.

Key to Australia’s strength is inclusive dialogue and engagement with all faiths.

Australia is proud and firmly committed to our long-standing bonds with all OIC members. Australia’s Special Envoy to the OIC supports its efforts to address global challenges, including combating Islamophobia.

Third, we know there is more to do.

Combating Islamophobia will require sustained commitment—from governments, communities, and all of us working together. Only through
collective effort can we hope to eradicate it.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Australia stands in solidarity with Muslims at home and around the world, and with all those who seek to
practice their religion or belief in peace and safety.

I thank you.
