250801 - UNSG Mandate Review

UNSG MANDATE REVIEW - STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF CANZ (CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND)

Delivered by H.E. Mr James Larsen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations

1 August 2025

Thank you very much indeed, President and all formalities observed.

The mandate review is a significant milestone in the UN80 Initiative, and we thank the UN80 Taskforce , and in particular USG Guy Ryder, but many others as well for the immense work that's gone into producing it. Even reading it, briefly as we have it's quite clear that helps us establish a pathway forward to dealing with this very complicated issue.

We recognise the efforts taken to include practical proposals to improve the design, delivery, and review of mandates to enhance impact, efficiency, and accountability across the UN system, and we very much value those.

We take this opportunity as CANZ to confirm our commitment to working with Member States and the UN system to bring more discipline and strategy to how mandates are created and reviewed. And I'm very concious of the Secretary-General's remarks that in fact the question of mandates is very much a question for the Member States, and I acknowledge and appreciate that.

It's clearly on us all as Member States to make the UN system more responsive, effective and impactful, and we need to work together to deliver that.

We look forward to engaging further with Member States in the coming weeks on the report and its recommendations, with a view to agreeing actions that will strengthen the UN and its ability to improve the lives of the people we serve, including the most vulnerable.

Thank you.
