250612: 10th Emergency Special Session Protecting Civilians and Upholding Legal and Humanitarian Obligations

UNGA: 10TH EMERGENCY SPECIAL SESSION - PROTECTING CIVILIANS AND UPHOLDING LEGAL AND HUMANITARIAN OBLIGATIONS - EXPLANATION OF VOTE

Statement delivered by H.E. Mr James Larsen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations

Thursday 12 June

Thank you President.

Australia voted in favour of this resolution because we want to see an immediate return to a ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional and immediate release of hostages, adherence to international humanitarian law by all parties, and rapid, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access.

While we do not agree with everything in this resolution, our vote today reflects our commitment to working with the international community to end this conflict.

Australia remains unequivocal in our condemnation of Hamas, and its abhorrent attacks on 7 October 2023, and all ongoing acts of terror.

Terrorist group Hamas must release all hostages immediately, unconditionally and with dignity, and we demand the hostages are given humane treatment, including freedom from any form of torture or abuse, and access to health care.

Australia is disappointed that today’s resolution failed to condemn Hamas – there can be no role for Hamas in the future governance of Gaza.

President,

Civilians are being killed by the thousand. Children are starving.

We need to come together to ensure we support a two-state solution which remains the only pathway to enduring peace and security for Israeli and Palestinian people.

Thank you.
