Peacebuilding Commission Ambassadorial-level meeting on Colombia
Statement delivered by H.E. Mr James Larsen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations
23 April 2024
Thank you Chair,
And thank you very much indeed to Colombia’s Foreign Minister.
From Australia’s perspective, Columbia provides a very strong example of where the work of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) can make a real difference.
Columbia's example encourages us that we can do more to use the PBC to greater effect.
This is why Australia is such a strong supporter of the Peacebuilding Commission, and through the Peacebuilding Fund, where we have very substantially increased our commitment to AUD15million per year.
There are four aspects of the Columbian example of particular interest to us, and all were touched on this morning.
The first is the emphasis on creating dialogue with all armed actors.
The second is the inclusive nature of the peace process, especially involving Indigenous actors.
The third is the important role of taking account of women as part of the conflict resolution process.
And fourth is to recognise the ongoing engagement by the Peacebuilding Commission. We also recognise there are continuing challenges in implementation of Colombia’s Peace Agreement which require the PBC’s involvement.
Thank you Chair for providing us with this opportunity to reflect on a genuine success story, notwithstanding the challenges that remain. We look forward to our further engagement on this issue.
Thank you.
