250117: UN Peacebuilding Commission Ambassadorial-level meeting on the Inter-American Development Bank Framework for Supporting Populations in Situations of Fragility, Conflict, and Criminal Violence

UN PEACEBUILDING COMMISSION AMBASSADORIAL-LEVEL MEETING ON THE INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK FRAMEWORK FOR SUPPORTING POPULATIONS IN SITUATIONS OF FRAGILITY, CONFLICT, AND CRIMINAL VIOLENCE

17 JANUARY 2025

STATEMENT BY H.E. REBECCA BRYANT, AMBASSADOR AND DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Thank you Chair for convening today’s meeting.

I thank also the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Under-Secretary-General, and representative from Ecuador, Guatemala and Honduras for the insightful briefings.

We welcome today’s presentation on the implementation of IDB’s Framework, and in particular, the efforts being undertaken by IDB to respond to the complex and interconnected challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Please allow me to make three brief points:

Firstly, we commend the Framework’s territorial approach, which identifies areas affected by fragility, conflict and criminal violence at the national and also the subnational level.

This builds on the effectiveness of regional approaches, while recognising there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, even within state borders.

Secondly, we welcome the focus on prevention and protection of vulnerable populations from conflict and criminal violence.

This is as an area of potential collaboration between the IDB and this Commission in particular, in relation to the development of national prevention strategies.

Finally, we welcome the growing collaboration between the regional development banks and the Peacebuilding Commission.

We hope to see the Peacebuilding Fund and the PBSO Partnership Facility’s work to support country-level collaboration expand, including through joint analysis and engagement.

Such collaboration can also support – and sustainably finance – national prevention strategies, and provide more holistic support for national peacebuilding priorities.

In conclusion President, I’d like to thank you for sharing with us your views on how the UN’s peacebuilding architecture, including this Commission, can institutionalise these practices.

Thank you.
